I am requesting 8 different titles of young adult fiction novels for my high school students. Instead of ordering (1) class set and limiting choice, I plan to let my student choose which book interests them, and they will join a reading group of students who are also reading the same title. Themes we hope to read deal with coming of age, relationships, peer pressure and loss. I want to challenge my students to participate in reading a minimum of 2 novels and participating in several different book talks with their peers, and then writing about these authentic themes that relate to their lives. My students prompted me to start this project. They dislike reading because the books we often read don't relate to their lives today. You may be asking---Why not dust off the old classics? We do...we will never eliminate those. Yet, young adult novels like All American Boys, Twisted, Hate List, How It Went Down, Perfect Chemistry and Speak will help them make sense of the world they live in, to develop a personal credo, and determine what is right and, equally, what is wrong on their own terms. To sum it up, the young adult literature for this project has the capacity to help my students deal with the realities of life, and in the end become productive citizens.
