Working with my students in small groups allows me to provide lessons focused on skills they are missing. A kidney table is not available in our district. The students and I have been moving around, working at student desks, or on the floor, neither of which are the best solution for small groups. We need a dedicated space for our small group instructions. Being able to write directly on the table allows those students with fine motor disabilities to focus on the academic skill being learned, and not become frustrated with paper or a white board that moves, this frustration often prevents their learning. Having a dedicated table for small groups will assist in quicker transition time as students will always go to the same spot for group work. Writing directly on the table avoids the frustration many of my students have when writing on something that moves, such as paper and whiteboards. A dedicated table that students can write directly on will increase time on task, increase learning, and will continue to help accelerate their learning shrinking the gap between them and their grade mates!
