My students strive to achieve success, but sometimes it is hard to find books that truly engage them. As middle school students, they love a good love story, and what love story is more famous than Romeo and Juliet? For many readers, Shakespeare can be scary and intimidating. I want to ease my students into Shakespeare before they enter high school in order to help them make the transition easier for them. Romeo and Juliet have a simple plot that is easier for students to follow along with. The students will read and act out of the play together in class. If they do not understand something, we can use the "No Fear" pages to help us get through the tough parts. The drama, the sword fights, and the love story will draw my students in and show them that understanding Shakespeare is not out of their reach. My goal is to make Shakespeare come alive for them. This includes helping the students learn the dance from the ball scene where Romeo and Juliet meet each other for the first time. My students will also create masks that they can wear to act out the scenes. This project will help my students expand their world and accomplish something that they never though they would be able to do.
