At the beginning of this school year, I experimented with flexible seating in the classroom. I came out of my pocket and bought a few comfy chairs for the kids in my class in order to determine whether or not this was a long term arrangement I would want to make in my classes. Having teachers come by and compliment my classroom was one thing, but I wanted to see if my kids would not only like it, but be productive with these types of seats in the room. Students, of course, were a bit timid in the beginning. I mean, what teacher really has moon chairs and a big red futon in their room! However, with the small amount of chairs I purchased in my room, my students have really enjoyed and taken advantage of them over the course of the semester. Because of this, I want to turn my whole classroom into an area of flexible seating. With this arrangement, students will feel more at home and comfortable each day while doing work. Hopefully with this project, I will be able to get more teachers on board with flexible seating in their rooms as well.
