I am a first grade teacher and for the past 6 years I have been doing music with a severely handicapped teacher and her class. She has graciously allowed the students to use her instruments, however over the years the love the students have shared with them had caused many to break and become irreparable. Without rhythm instruments it is hard for us to teach them that music has rhythm and how to adapt that to our daily lives. With the two classes joining together it also teaches the students socialization skills and despite their differences they come together for one common purpose - to learn about music and how to keep rhythm. However since many of the instruments are broken, students have to take turns and instruction becomes less effective when students are sitting out. They all share willingly, but it would be great to have new instruments and enough for everyone.
