A large part of language acquisition and comprehension involves reading stories a loud. The University of Kansas conducted a study that stated that, "...parents on welfare spoke about 620 words to their children in an average hour compared with 2,150 words an hour spoken by parents with professional jobs. By age 3, the children with professional parents had heard 30 million more words than the children whose parents were on welfare." Unfortunately, many of the students in my classroom fall into the welfare category and lack both the drive and the resources to become the great readers I know they can be. The books I have requested are rich with vocabulary resulting in better writing, language and even math. These books will be used to teach specific comprehension strategies; strategies that will be used for the rest of their life. Through the use of these books I will help my students gain an appreciation for quality literature and reading in general. These books will take my students to new places, help them to understand the world around them a little better and teach them how to laugh and enjoy reading.
