For the past few years my students have been Citizen Scientists using Zooniverse.org. The students help researchers sort through and identify photos taken by trail cameras (camera traps) across the world. This gives the students an opportunity to see organisms in their native habitats and lets them participate in real research studies. The purchase of trail cameras for our classroom will allow the students to take their learning to the next level and discover the organisms that live in our community. The trail cameras will be set (with permission when necessary) in differing habitats in the greater Manchester community. Students often do not realize how much wildlife lives nearby since our school is in an urban setting. This project will lead students think globally and act locally by making more connections with their environment. Students will have the opportunity to design their own project based learning assignments and investigate questions that matter to them. The inspiration for this project came from field researchers across the United States that are currently participating in a project called #SnaphotUSA which is organized by eMammal, a data management system that is also on Zooniverse. They are looking to identify trends in mammals communities across the United States. The long term goal of "Bringing the Outdoors In: Trail Cams in the Classroom" is to provide students the opportunity to participate in real-time research studies like #SnapshotUSA which we would not otherwise be able to do with our schools urban setting.
