Over the course of the year, the students will study literature from a wide array of genres, including, but not limited to, classic dystopian, Greek Mythology, and Shakespeare. One of the most exciting and engaging genres is that of mystery and suspense. However, as an urban public school, we lack the resources to provide students with the necessary books for this unit. A unit on suspense would not be complete without the tales of the beloved private detective, Sherlock Holmes. We will use the trials and tribulations of Holmes to study plot and character development, foreshadowing, irony, and syntax. These reading skills can then be translated to other genres of literature. We will incorporate supplementary texts, as well, in order to compare and contrast author style. Students will conclude the unit by putting these skills in action by writing their own suspense short story.
