Students will be reading books based on how young people handle world issues throughout the year. As the subject matter of the books can be challenging, they will read these books in groups. They will work together to think critically about what the characters endure and how solutions to the problems and conflicts presented can be solved. They will also read nonfiction articles that connect to each book, enabling them to better understand the history that surrounds us. The class is designed so that students will rotate through the book sets over the course of the year. Facilitating access to books that address world issues, allows students to see the world beyond their current situation, develop empathy, feel empowered, and strengthen literacy skills. It is my intention that these books become the impetus for creating service learning projects for the school and community. Books grant us access to the lives of others, and student often are compelled to make life and circumstance better for others once they are captivated by someone else's story as told in a book.
