I teach reading (Grades K-5) in an economically deprived area in of a large city in the southwest. I work for the school system's Homeless Project. To qualify for our program, children have to be homeless (living on the streets, in inadequate accommodations, with relatives, etc.). Most of the children I service come from homes that have no running water or utilities. I work with students to improve their reading skills and to expand their sense of self-worth. We develop their determination to overcome the odds by setting goals for rising from their difficult situations. I would like to obtain funding to buy books that children can use during class and take home to build their personal libraries. Since I read aloud to my youngest students, I would like to purchase books (rather than borrowing from the public library) so children can feel the books and "read" to themselves.
