I want to set up a LEGO Wall in our school's Makerspace. A LEGO Wall is a wall area with LEGO base plates - flat LEGO pieces affixed in a grid pattern- and a selection of "bricks" which are the LEGO pieces. Students use the "bricks" to build shapes and structures on the wall that others can add on to and view. The materials that I am requesting in this proposal will help me set up a LEGO Wall in our Makerspace area for the students in my K-5 elementary school to use. The gray base plates will be arranged in a grid and attached to a large piece of plywood which is secured to a wall. (Our district's construction department can help with that.) I am also requesting the LEGO Community Starter set, about 2,000 LEGO pieces to get us started with building on the wall. Students in my school visit the Makerspace area in my Library/Learning Commons for 10-minute periods throughout the day and week. During that time, they can explore paper crafts, a musical keyboard, a typewriter, games, puzzles, and with your support build something for display on the LEGO Wall. I plan to offer both free exploration, challenges, and specific activities with the LEGO Wall, all supporting STEM concepts that we teach: science, technology, engineering, mathematics. When students are engaged in these Makerspace activities, I see in them a sense of peace, confidence, learning, pride, and beneficial social interaction.
