Our students are equipped with iPads for using in class. However, they are not given headphones and many families cannot afford to provide them for their students. We use our iPads every day, but we are limited to apps that are used silently. Our English Learners would benefit from a whole new world of possibilities if sound were available! They could improve both their listening and speaking skills which are key to reading and writing. In addition to the apps, our students are required to take tests on their devices. It is required to have the sound on so students with limited reading abilities can understand the questions. However, it is difficult for anyone to concentrate with 30 iPads making noise at the same time. Headphones would provide a huge advantage to these students. It would increase their test and provide additional accommodations for special needs students. In addition, we rotate students depending on their needs so these would be used by most of the entire first grade!
