Donations that lead to the purchase of 6 Sphero robots will provide my students with multiple opportunities for meaningful classroom play. All too frequently the English classroom follows a traditional model: read, discuss, read, discuss. While this is valuable, 21st-century technology has expanded the horizon of instructional possibilities in an English class. Imagine a high school English lesson beginning with, "Class, today we will be learning with robots!" Spheros can be used as representations of characters--the paths they are programmed to take, representations of character struggles or journeys through a text. Fictional and real-life persons in texts seem distant to students, but metaphorical, hands-on experience with the characters increases empathy and understanding. Being able to take the perspective of a character through collaborative play, would build engagement, especially for struggling readers, while still allowing opportunities for practice with more traditional English skills such as analysis and evaluation. Bringing the Spheros into my room would provide my students new experiences in mastering the skills of ELA study. The relationships between coding, logic, and language are complimentary, and I look forward to watching my students blend these factors in their learning!
