Navigating the climate in Saint Louis is challenging for adults and not alone students who have not yet grappled with their identity. My scholars will read about another student that was just like them and be introduced to another child that is experiencing some of life's difficulties being a person of color. My students will become so invested in the book and classroom discussion that they will enjoy reading and also make progress on their Common Core standards and their Missouri State Assessments. The goal is for all sixth graders to read the same book. Each Friday we will have a class discussion about the book to increase student investment and understanding.
