Students in my fifth grade reading classes (there are nearly 90 of them!) will soon be embarking on a unit to learn strategies for reading non-fiction. Our reading program embraces the philosophy that children learn best when reading books that interest them and that are "just right" in terms of difficulty level. Lots of students + diverse interests and abilities = a need for LOTS of books! In order for my students to have a non-fiction book to read, at their instructional reading level and on a topic that they enjoy, our classroom library needs some help with copies of Time For Kids and Sports Illustrated For Kids. Ideally, we need more than one copy of the same title, since having multiple copies of the same book gives students the opportunity for shared student discourse, and they love sharing their ideas about their reading with a partner!
