Students from different backgrounds, especially English Language Learners (ELL’s), need to be read to so that they may listen to pronunciation, reading fluency, and vocabulary. Picture books will allow the students to more easily understand the story with the pictures when they are being read to. Most picture books offer more complex vocabulary which bilingual students need to learn, and they offer interesting plots which help keep the readers engaged. The diversity of books that we want for our classroom will include content areas, reading skills, growth mindset, and cultural diversity, and will be tied to the objectives covered in class.
