I am a high school teacher and adviser for an organization called Family, Career and Community Leaders of America as well as Advisor for the National Honor Society. Both of those organizations are community service based. My students are eager to help the community, but COVID is really putting a damper on that. So we came up with the idea for Computer Companions. My idea is to collaborate with an assisted living facility to create profiles of residents that need a companion, or just something to look forward to. The high schoolers will then be paired with a companion based on interests. The high schoolers really want to reach patients and residents who can't get visitors, or who would love to get a video or letter from a high schooler. The high schoolers are committed to creating at least 1 prerecorded video per week for a minimum of 12 weeks, but they've been encouraged to continue through the entire school year. The videos would be put into a Google drive, where the nursing staff would have access to them and would deliver them to the residents. The residents can then respond to the high schooler, and kind of like a pen pal, but their response would be through videos. We have discussed this idea with several nursing homes, but they all said the same thing-This is a great idea, but we don't have the technology to run this program. The purchase of these tablets would enable the students and elderly to communicate as much as they want! It would make the students and community happy!
