Our current textbooks for Science and Social Studies are around 15 years old. They are out of date and many of them do not even have the material we need to cover our standards. Scholastic News does a great job of helping students keep up with current events and social studies/science topics that relate to the 3rd-grade curriculum. Each 3rd-grade teacher will be able to use the Scholastic News instead of an outdated textbook that students find boring. Students love getting to keep their "newspaper" and taking it home to show their parents what they studied and learned. Each student can have a Scholastic News to write on and use for learning. We will use them to not only teach social studies and science but also reading. Nonfiction text is a huge part of the 3rd-grade curriculum and Scholastic News is a great way to introduce students to nonfiction and text features. The student also learn math by looking and working with charts and graphs that the Scholastic News provides. We also enjoy the online feature of Scholastic News where videos and topics are easily accessible and teachers are not having to waste valuable time trying to search and watch videos that are school appropriate. Our entire 3rd-grade team feels Scholastic News is a great way for our students to learn about Science and Social Studies.
