My students have learning disabilities, which can make school difficult. They come to school everyday ready to do their best. They can get bogged down, however, in the daily frustration of struggling to do what seemingly comes easy for others. I try to combat that feeling by using Positive Reinforcers such as praise, stickers and eventually prizes. I'm requesting positive reinforcements including Star Student wristbands, student incentive charts and pencils, stickers, pads, eraser toppers and notepads. Seeing a face light up with the knowledge of work well done is amazing! A sticker may seem like an inconsequential item, but these kids work hard to earn them. They respect their classroom, their classmates, their teacher and themselves. They come to the classroom on time, prepared and with a positive attitude. When they earn thirty stickers, they become a Star Student! They write their name on a star and place it on a bulletin board in our room. Then the moment we have all been waiting for arrives - they are able to choose a prize for the Star Student Prize Box! They enjoy looking at every offering and it is difficult to make a choice. When they walk out of the room, with their head held high, clutching a new eraser or pencil, there is such a sense of accomplishment. I am humbled every day by the tenaciousness and effort of these kids.
