Reading Scholastic News is a weekly activity in our classroom. Students look forward to the chance to read about what is happening in the world. As a class, we complete a shared reading, point out non-fiction text features, and re-read with a partner. The online resources that accompany the magazine, are also helpful tools to engage students in the material. Students take ownership of their learning while drawing conclusions and making connections with the material in the Scholastic News articles. These connections help to bridge the gap between different subject areas. I have seen firsthand how these magazines increase the engagement within my classroom.
