My students are readers, but they need texts that will help them evolve into true college students. For reading workshop time, my students select their own texts and mostly read young adult fiction or contemporary adult fiction. It's wonderful to see them engaged with books like The Fault in Our Stars, The Martian, The Firm, or The Hunger Games, and these self-selected texts are affirming their love of reading. However, since my students are in a dual credit college course, I want to encourage them to read more challenging texts to push them further into a deeper level of thinking. As I tell them, reading in and of itself is good, regardless of the text you choose! It's about balance though, and I want them exposed to higher-level texts like they will see in college and are also seeing in our class now. I want them to be confident, developing a love for all genres, including literary fiction and creative nonfiction. The texts I have selected for my project are vital for transforming my students from high school readers into collegiate readers! The books I have selected provide much variety, and students will be able to select from this list, finding books that appeal to them personally. These are beautiful books . . . Cold Mountain, The Kite Runner, Angela's Ashes, Seabiscuit, A River Runs Through It, The Namesake, and Freakonomics are just a few titles I have selected for my students. We will use these titles for independent reading, discussion, and analysis, but we will also do literature circles where students in small groups read the same text and work together. I'm also excited to introduce the Family Book Club to my class where parents will be encouraged to read the books and visit our class for discussion!
