As a teacher in Baltimore City, I see that my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. The really unique thing about my students is that they are coming to the classroom with such a depth of experiences in their lives. This creates an exceptionally enriching and emotionally empowering studio art environment. They have such incredibly profound ideas and experiences that they are extremely eager to have a voice to discuss and explore. Art has the ability to be this language, allowing my students to take risks, explore, discuss, and learn about themselves, their community, and their lives, through a safe and empowering way. Oil painting is an extremely empowering medium, often reserved for elite art schools and college art education and inaccessible to those outside of these institutions. I believe that bringing an oil painting program into my high school in Baltimore City will empower students to discuss themselves and their community , while also giving them tools that will greatly help them gain acceptance into art schools of their choosing. With the materials provided by you, we will build an oil painting program at my high school where students will learn historical painting techniques such as Grisaille (19th Century), Glazing (15th Century), Baroque (16th Century), as well as more modern techniques in order to use painting as a language to discuss self. We need need painting canvases, various shades of oil color paints, palette paper, palette knives, paint brushes, and linseed oil.
