"The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks" is a novel that has both scientific and ethical connotations. This book will start a discourse in the classroom about many topics. I will introduce this book when we first begin discussing cells and what defines a cell. From there I will bring up the novel when we discuss scientific research and diseases such as AIDS and cancer. Finally, when we finish the book, we can discuss the ethics behind the novel. Students will be required to voice their opinion and write an argumentative essay on the topic. This will help sharpen their writing skills for ELA. The book is challenging, so it would be great to have enough copies for each student to really break apart the text. It would be helpful to have enough copies for each of my students so we can read the book together. This novel is challenging and will require the students to connect different parts of science to the novel and increase their reading and interpretation skills, an area that our school is focusing on for the upcoming year.
