I want to introduce technology and coding to my 7th graders. My students are almost all from low income backgrounds, and have little or no opportunity to work with the technology that can prepare them for the challenges of the future. I am introducing students for the first time to actual computer science in the form of computer coding that I incorporate into my science curriculum. I believe that robotics is a concrete way for them to understand programming concepts while improving their critical thinking skills. Offering coding and robotics will help them acquire skills that they can use to achieve success, and will allow me to reach students in a way that might motivate those who are beyond the reach of traditional teaching. I currently have one Lego Mindstorm set that was funded through a grant, while so far 30 of my 120 students have asked to work on it. I feel that a second set would allow others to participate, and I plan to make teams of different groups of students that can alternate and "compete" with each other. While I know some programming, I am learning robotics along with my students, and am amazed at how quickly they have picked up on the construction, and how much they have taught me so far. I look forward to increasing my knowledge as well as theirs, and taking the journey with them. As one of my favorite robots, Buzz Lightyear would say, "To infinity and beyond!"
