Being from working class families, my students don't get many experiences with the Arts. Teaching my students to play the Ukulele will give them a chance to have a new experience. As an elementary Fine Arts teacher, one thing I try to do is prepare my students to be able to make educated choices that could effect their futures. When my students get to middle school, they get the opportunity to choose a Fine Art elective. These consist of band, orchestra, choir, theater and art. Many of these students will fall in love with these classes and continue in these organizations throughout high school and even beyond. (That's exactly what happened to me!) In my classroom, I have opportunities to let my students experience art (drawing, painting, creating) and choir (singing, learning to read music), but not band or orchestra (actually holding and playing an instrument). By allowing my students the opportunity to learn and play the Ukulele, I will be able to introduce them to a whole new aspect of Fine Arts....Instruments!
