Each day I am delighted to spend my days with my Kindergartener class. We sing, question, and learn through experiences to make abstract ideas concrete. Unfortunately, due to the restraints of our classroom size, I feel limited in our explorations and I see the effect that our unconventional classroom has on the students. It isn't fair to assume that all students can work independently while sitting with 4 or 5 of their peers. From my experience, at least half of my class is highly distracted by their current seating arrangement. I want my students to collaborate (and we do!), but when they need to work independently, they should have options that are the most conducive to their learning style and preference. My students will feel empowered during each assignment to choose where they will work best! My "wiggle worms" may choose to sit in a wobble chair in order to balance their body's needs. Some students may prefer to spread out and lay with a pillow and clipboard to complete their work. Others may like to work in pairs in a cube chair. Choice and empowerment go hand-in-hand! My students will be able to take responsibility and ownership for their learning everyday through the addition of these flexible seating options.
