So many students are focused on the impersonal screens of technology, with little engagement, or the wrong kind, due to social media. While that serves a purpose in our time, my goal for my students is to introduce them and engage them with turning pages to find the thrill of reading and writing! Number the Stars will take them back to a time they may hardly imagine, while teaching them history, higher order thinking, and what they may have done if they were in that situation. So many children rely on social media and search engines, and have never learned how to dig deeper for meaning. Dictionaries and Thesauruses will allow them to feel the joy of learning on their own! My goal is to see my students grow and feel pride in developing their own stories to tell, to create their own poetry to share, and to appreciate the things that their world has pushed aside. My students have such creativity, and have only scratched the surface of what they can achieve! What a feeling to take them from being content with the mediocre, to seeing how amazing they can truly be. They deserve that chance, and should be allowed to stretch themselves.
