A listening center would provide many amazing benefits for my students. Not only would students have an exciting way to read books, but it will also allow me to work in small groups with the remaining students. Individualized instruction with more one-on-one attention is beneficial to student success. A listening center would allow me to provide this, while being confident that the students working independently are still focused and learning. Students can enter a world of imagination, develop new literacy skills, and most importantly gain a love of reading. Many of the students in my class are not read aloud to at home, which is crucial in developing emergent reading skills. By having a listening center in class, it provides these students with additional opportunities to hear stories out loud. They can learn to track print, read with emotion, and comprehend words. A listening center can also help students gain independence and become confident readers. And all of these things will help encourage my students to continue reading in the future.
