Since our fifth grade students have a wide range of reading levels, these books will provide a diverse classroom library with both fiction and nonfiction titles that will keep students engaged and allow them to experience a love of reading. They will have a variety of materials to choose from during independent reading time. Additionally, the sets of novels will be used during reading class, and students will apply various Common Core reading skills we have worked on throughout the year. In previous years, I have found that novels such as Where the Red Fern Grows have captured students' interest and have kept them thoroughly engaged, which is essential in instilling a love of reading in students.
