Once a week the students in this after-school hiking club will be taken on a local hike to experience the natural beauty of our area. Students will be immersed in the flora, fauna, geology and history of our area. On each hike, students in pairs, will be an "expert" in identifying the flora/fauna/rocks we see. Those students will carry the field guides for the area they are "experts" in on that hike and help practice proper identification. The use of these materials will increase their oral and written vocabulary and background knowledge. Many of the students in this club have made minimal progress on English/Language Arts state testing the previous year. Students will be asked to write articles to submit to the local newspaper and our district online web-site that informs the community about the diversity of flora, fauna, geology, and history of our area. Taking these students on local hiking trails will not only improve their observation and science skills, but also their physical fitness, confidence, vocabulary, reading/writing skills, and social skills. We need these wildlife Pocket Guides to make our adventures into learning opportunities!
