My goal is to combine the Internet of Things (IOT) with a Makerspace so that students can follow our motto of “Where learning means more doing”. To do so, I am remodeling an existing lab to be the twenty-first century computer science (STEM) lab. Students will have access to small tools and a storage room full of raw materials for building their devices and enhancing them with Arduino or Raspberry Pi microcontrollers. These devices will work in collaboration with our Science Department to develop apps to support students’ Capstone projects in the collection of data that can be analyzed and improve our environment and/or community. Our first step in building this twenty-first century lab is to master coding in combination with the Mbot. The Mbot has several accessories that allow for a variety of data collection formats for investigations. This system also allows adapters to be added to further their building into a laser engraver, electronic inventor kit, robotic arm, interactive light and sound add-on pack, 3D printer kit, and music robotic kit to name a few.
