I teach our solar system science unit to all third graders at my school. These students are at different stages in their reading processes. Many of the nonfiction books they find at the library and book stores can be difficult for some students to comprehend. I want all students to succeed with our solar system unit. Through providing students with nonfiction texts at varying levels, all students can gain access to the material and build confidence in both their reading and overall learning. Through text sets, including science vocabulary readers and Scholastic News nonfiction readers, students can work together with the guidance of their teacher to successfully pull information from texts while improving their reading capabilities. Outer space is a very exciting and mysterious topic for students. These nonfiction texts will help all our third grade students achieve success in learning all the exciting things there are to know about our solar system.
