I have been an advocate for flexible seating ever since I first witnessed it in action. I was observing a classroom during my student teaching placement a few years back and I can remember being astounded at how different this classroom looked. There were standing desks with fidgets for student feet, there were rocking chairs, students laying on floor cushions, and the room was low lit for the students to work on a project. I remember thinking, "How in the world does this work?" Now, after teaching for two years in a Title I school, I know exactly how, or more importantly why, it works. Each student processes information in a different way, so why do we try to make them fit into one specific learning environment? My goal is to make sure that each student has a space in my classroom where they can go to focus, to do their best work, and to know that they can be successful. The Switch Sit or Stand desk in my classroom would be extremely beneficial. I have had numerous students in the past two years who have struggled to focus and sometimes to stay awake while seated at their desks. Many have requested to stand up as they do work, but then must hunch over to write on their desk. Having the option to stand up and do work would help students with attention difficulties to keep focused on their learning. Some students need to be in their own space entirely, which is why they would love the Flex Space Floor Seats. These seats will allow students to take control of their learning, and become agents of their own success. They would be used during independent reading time as well as group work time to foster agency in my young learners.
