History comes to life through great literature and these books will enrich my students understanding of American and Minnesota history. Each book will enhance our nonfiction textbook reading about different eras in American history with an emphasis on the history of their home state, Minnesota. Minnesota Anishinaabe history will be brought to life through Louise Erdrich's amazing book, The Birchbark House. Christopher Paul Curtis' Elijah of Buxton and The Watson's Go to Birmingham will bring understanding to African American history prior to the Civil War and during the Civil Rights Movement. Native Minnesota authors William Durbin and Laura Ingalls Wilder will help tell the story of early Minnesota immigrants and pioneers.
