The students will shop one day per week for individual books to keep and read during reading time each day at their 'just right' level. The students will read the books during independent reading time to practice fluency. They will be assessed periodically so ensure that they are reading the correct independent level for them. As their teacher I will pull them for conferences and strategy groups to work with their books. Each student will have 10 books per week to be reading at their independent level. Many books are needed to get this reading program started. Reader's Workshop is a fabulous way to get kids reading and keep their interest, it just requires A LOT of BOOKS. During Reader's Workshop they will also have an opportunity to listen to books on tape. I have many, but do not have a listening center for them to listen to the books on tape. By students reading at their level with a wide variety of books to utilize, they will increase their reading fluency. Reading, reading, and more reading has proven to increase children's reading fluency. Making reading a daily activity, not just instructional reading, but pleasure reading is a way to get kids interest level up. Children will have access to a variety of leveled books both non-fiction and fiction to choose from in my leveled library.
