Every year the History teacher, Writing teacher, and myself the Reading teacher work together to complete a Civil Rights unit for the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade. We try to vary the groups that we address in this unit so they not only learn about African American Civil Rights but also Latino. It is important that the students read novels in which they can identify with the characters in order to make connections as well as expand their knowledge beyond their own personal experience. This novel, Caminar, portrays the hardships of a teen in Guatemala which is unique to the experiences they have read about in the past.

About my class
