Two areas that my students struggle with are listening and reading. The majority of my students have grown up in homes where a language other than English is spoken, and there is little access to books. Incorporating listening with books and audio CDs will help to strengthen their language skills and promote reading. My students need access to rich literature that they can listen to so that they can increase their listening skills, pick up new language, and discover books that stretch their imagination. The books with audio CDs will be used in a listening center as part of the Daily 5 literacy system. Students will have the opportunity to listen to a wide variety of books cooperatively with others and respond to the stories with partners and in writing. Many of my students read below grade level and do not have the confidence to read complex texts on their own. My sincere hope is that by establishing a listening center in my classroom with rich texts and audio, that my students' attitude of "I can't read" will shift to "I am a reader."
