My school district has firm guidelines for face to face learners that are getting ready to return. We must limit exposure to Covid-19 by reducing the amount of hands-on manipulatives that students can use. Manipulatives are key to providing effective, active, engaging lessons in the teaching of mathematics. Manipulatives are very important in the development process because they allow students the ability to move from concrete experiences to abstract reasoning. I am requesting class size sets of unifix cubes, geometrical shapes, geo sticks and base ten blocks because I do not want my students to lose out on the opportunity to learn math using hands-on tools due to the pandemic. After we get control of the pandemic, my students and future students will still be able to use all of the materials because they are non-consumable.
