I teach a diverse group of students, including many recent immigrants from all over the world. My students speak more than 30 different languages. Some have just recently arrived in the U.S. Others have lived in the school's neighborhood their whole lives. Over 90% of my students are low income, one in five has an IEP, and more than half are English language learners. In my classroom students spend the majority of their time working in small groups, collaborating to complete math tasks and projects. My goal is to develop in my students a true sense of the breadth and beauty of mathematics, to engage them in finding patterns, discovering connections among ideas, taking time to explore concepts and seek deep understanding, making and testing conjectures, and otherwise interacting with math the way mathematicians do.
