My kids spend 9 weeks studying ancient river valley civilizations (Egypt, Mesopotamia, China, India). The annual flooding of their rivers had a huge impact on the civilizations that grew in those valleys. A stream table will give kids many opportunities to engage with inquiry-based projects. In one lesson, kids would work collaboratively and would experiment with the destruction caused by a flood, and propose different ways to mitigate loss of life and property. In another lesson, kids would observe the fertile silt left behind after a flood, and write about the affect this had for farmers. Another lesson would involve students trying to develop their own systems of water storage, so that flood waters could be saved for the dry season. In all of these lessons, kids will be the ones using the table and carrying out demonstrations. The stream table will also be used for a demonstrations about river navigation, viking long-boats, and Roman aqueducts. Furthermore, our science teachers will also have access to the stream table. Active, hands-on learning will help kids perceive the floods' destructive nature while being critically necessary for ancient civilization. Kids often do not fully grasp this concept through the usual methods of reading and watching video clips. A hands-on experience will engage kids. Allowing kids the opportunity to experiment with different mitigation techniques will give kids an opportunity to predict outcomes. Also, it will show kids that history was not a set of predetermined outcomes, but the result of many flexible intersections.
