Just as Jon Krakauer had to face and overcome the hardships of Mt. Everest, my at-risk students struggle to find literature that captures their interest while getting them to reach academically. I teach 12th grade English at a high school with Small Learning Communities. I teach in the SLC called SHAPE which allows students with an interest in pursuing a future career in some aspect of the medical field (from nursing, to sports therapist, to veterinarian - and many more in between!) to focus those studies in high school. The students attend focused classes in science, health, history, athletics, PE, English and history. At least 50% of the students in the program are academically at risk (for my senior class, that number hovers closer to 75%).
