Because the students at our school are unable to purchase their own books, we have always been limited in choice and confined to reading the same novel sets year-after-year. We'd like to add The Lord of the Flies and Into the Wild to our collection to help the students continue on their journey of self-discovery, weighing in on the choices people make when faced with adversity. The pairing of this selection will force students to step out of their comfort zone and ask themselves questions about America's capitalism, environmental policies, and hypothetical situations. The students will use these engaging books as anchor texts while exploring other aspects of the human psyche, such as investigating the qualities of a leader or evaluating varying opinions on how to live in an ever-changing world. Students will read the stories, trace the plot, analyze characterization, and make critical connections to themselves, other texts, other studies, and the world. While reading independently at home, they will draw on the books during class discussion while studying informational articles that align with the standards. At the end of the novel study, the students will demonstrate their knowledge in a variety of ways, by writing an essay or participating in a creative group activity. All in the all, our school needs some fresh reading material that will continue to push the students' curiosity and help mold them into analytical thinkers.
