I teach Algebra II at a Title 1 school for immigrants. All of my students are first generation immigrants, and money is a limiting factor in all of their households. They need calculators in order to excel in my class; yet, none of them can afford one. It is so sad because the students get frustrated and think that math is not for them. Imagine graphing a cubic function by hand every time you had to solve a problem? My students have enough issues in their lives; let's take calculators out of the equation! On the SAT, students need to be proficient with calculators in order to score well. How can we encourage students to actualize their potential if the playing field isn't even level on standardized tests?
