Starting in a new school that is not Title I funded, the amount of leveled readers are minimal and old. The student's need a variety of books at their reading level to spark their interest in reading. The children have so much potential but without the right fit books, they will not necessarily want to pick up a book to read if it is not at their level. The students love to read on their own and having leveled books at their level they get so excited for reading. The students want to read and get so excited when can pick out a book and start reading the words. We have readers workshop which is an independent reading time and I conference with every student in my classroom at least once a week. This is the time I get to see how they are reading their books independently and work on their specific reading skills. Having more fiction and non-fiction leveled readers will increase their reading skills because they will be more engaged in reading.
