Confidence is the key to finding a love of reading and experiencing new things through literature. I want to expose my students to multiple genres, authors, plots, subjects, etc. This way, they will become confident in their reading and comprehension abilities. We are searching for the "CAN DO!" attitude, which can be difficult for middle school age students. Students need to understand that there are limitless possibilities when it comes to reading. They can read anything they choose and be transported to anywhere their hearts desire through literature. Being from a small town, my students are not often given the gift of travel. However, I believe literature can be their portal to experiencing new adventures in different worlds. The power of choice is thrilling to students because they feel responsible for their education. Having the ability to walk into a huge library or book store without being overwhelmed and having the confidence to choose a book is my goal for all of my students. Most of my students dislike reading because they have put limits on their book selections. "I can only read this series, this author, books on this topic, or on this specific book level." Therefore, my goal for my sixth graders is to build up their confidence through literature, so that they can understand their true potential.
