It is hard for 5th grade students to stay focused for long periods on complex tasks. If I want my students to learn to make decisions, I need to give them choices. Where do you sit when you are working and looking for inspiration? I'm guessing that it isn't always at your desk. Imagine if you had to sit on a hard plastic chair all day long. Research is beginning to show that alternatives to traditional desks and chairs in a classroom can improve student engagement and learning. The first item I am requesting are two stand-up desks with wiggle bars. Standing desks are an easy way to reduce the amount of sedentary seating students do. Similarly, wobble stools require using core strength to balance while in a seated position. Beanbags are the item that my students have requested the most. They are great for curling up with a book or partnering with a classmate for a discussion. Finally, none of the alternative seating will be effective if students don't have an easy way to move materials around the room, therefore I'm including bins in my project so that we can be neat and organized. The addition of alternative seating in our classroom will give my students an opportunity to get comfortable and discover what helps them focus and learn.
