About 10 years ago our school used to have the best school garden in the state. There were milking goats and abundant produce to sell at a school farmers market. Unfortunately the garden program was a bit neglected, but the spirit is back again! Our whole school and Paauilo community is excited to get the school garden back in action. Our school was even awarded a FoodCorps service member to be our garden coordinator, who will work with teachers to use the school garden to teach about STEM and nutrition education. My students are so excited to get their hands dirty in the garden and grow some plants! We have plans to plant sunflowers, bean teepees, and some quick growing veggies. We want to grow produce for our class and the whole school! I want my students to learn how to care and preserve our environment and to develop healthy eating habits, which is all aligned with common core standards. The materials from this project will enable us to get our garden back and in shape and get things growing again! We will be having community garden work days on weekends where families can come help complete bigger projects like making weed cover pathways and preparing planting beds. Our soil has not been planted in for a while so it needs lots of amendments like compost and fertilizers. To get a complete seed to table nutrition education experience, we will be cooking the produce we make and using recipes that relate to our rich culture. We have a great Home Economics room, ready with cooking supplies to use. The basic food supplies will help us create tasty recipes to create healthy eating behaviors!
