My 80 eighth grade students come from some of the toughest neighborhoods in Pennsylvania. Regardless of the obstacle, they board the bus and arrive at our KIPP charter school by 7:30 each morning, and work hard each day until 5:00 pm. Their dedication is astounding! Many students entered the year several grades behind, and so reading books of their choice that fit their level and interests is the key to catching up in their skills. They just need the right book to reignite their love of reading! Each day in Reading class, students read for 30 minutes in an independent reading book in class and another 30 minutes at home in order to practice their skills on a book of their choice. When a student finds a book that interests them, this daily hour of reading becomes a time of purpose and learning where students grow their skills. Having brand new, exciting book choices from a variety of genres is exactly what my students need in order to drive their reading time each day.
