Communication is key to learning any subject. With the mandated use of masks in MN during this time of COVID-19, I know I have students whose communication will be impacted, both expressively and receptively. These tools being sought are portable, flexible in their ability to be used, and will be able to impact not only my students with communication disorders, but all students within a classroom. The potential impacts on functional/adaptive skills, social interactions, academic access, and independence are immeasurable! Students who are difficult to understand without masks will face challenges without a clear "voice" while wearing masks, needing potential alternative communication methods to assist them. An up-to-date iPad dedicated to communication would be invaluable to students struggling with articulation, apraxia of speech, and fluency as they look for all ways to communicate effectively with new mandates in place. Because protective face masks reduce voice volume by 10-12 decibels, portible amplification systems will allow teacher voices to reach my students with communication needs more clearly, as well as other students as well. Placing these systems will allow students to more clearly hear their teachers' muffled voices in order to better participate in first best instruction.
