In alignment with our district and school goals, our school counseling program is focusing on academic support in the form of literacy. Within my gender-specific small groups of 5th grade students, I aim to promote individual reading/lexile level growth and performance on standardized assessments via BOOK CLUB. I share so many interests with my students, such as video games, humor, and imaginitive play. I wish to also share with them a true love of fiction. Maria Montessori said, "The goal of early childhood education should be to activate the child's own natural desire to learn," and my goal is to further foster our 5th graders' desire to learn through an affection for recreational reading. Through thoughtful examinaton of intentional texts selected to demonstrate examples of positive role models and reinforce positive messages (i.e. not judge on first impressions/opening ourselves to others), I hope to connect with them on a deeper level and analyze character strengths such as grit and resiliency and their role in personal growth and overcoming obstables to our goals.
